Virtual Reality and Pornography: A New Normal?
Technology is advancing faster than it ever has. In the past few years alone, there have been leaps and bounds made in tech, such as smart phones, personal computers and even self-driving cars. In many cases, humans may have only begun to scratch the surface of what technology can do.
One such area is developments in VR, or virtual reality. This new technology uses computer technology to create a simulated environment, placing the user inside the scene. By looking through a set of goggles, a viewer could walk through an underwater landscape, immersed in the sand, fish and salt water — all without leaving their home.
With developments in VR come developments in the pornography industry. Within the last several years, virtual reality pornography has begun making its way onto the market. According to some websites, views of VR porn are up 275 percent since it debuted in summer of 2016.
With this increase comes the increased possibility for addiction or abuse. Virtual reality sex or porn still has the possibility for addiction — in fact, many sexual addition therapists wonder if this type of pornography could have more severe consequences. There are still many unknowns about virtual pornography.
For example: Is virtual reality sex considered infidelity? Because of its realistic features, it may be closer to cheating than more traditional pornography.
We’ll continue to discuss virtual reality in relation to pornography in future blogs. However, if you have concerns regarding sexual addiction and virtual reality, consult a professional in the industry, such as a certified sexual addiction therapist.
