Self Care During Recovery – 5 Habits to Keep You on Track

During sexual addiction recovery, it can be difficult to manage the process and continue to take care of yourself. However, it is important to maintain habits on a daily basis so you stay healthy, mentally and physically. Below, we’ll explore some healthy self-care habits that you can follow each day to help you throughout the recovery process and beyond.

What is recovery?

To begin, let us first discuss recovery. Once you enter addiction recovery, you are agreeing to better yourself by seeking treatment for unhealthy behaviors. In other words, you are accepting your past and making a conscious decision to move forward in a healthier, safer way.

During recovery, you will work through your inappropriate behaviors, find acceptance and forgiveness, and make efforts every day to stay the sober adult you’ve agreed to become.

Follow recovery guidelines

While in recovery, there are many guidelines you must live by every day. At the beginning, these guidelines serve as barriers for you as you determine what is and is not healthy for you. Some guidelines include:

  • Ending of all contact with past relationships and triggers. If you were dating multiple people or staying in contact with sexual partners, now’s the time to cut off communication completely. If you are married, this step is crucially important for your spouse to feel comfortable moving forward with you in the recovery process.
  •  Beginning of therapy by yourself and with others. It is important to receive individual counseling along your journey to discuss the details of your addiction that you’d prefer to work through in private. You can start to work into group therapy when you feel comfortable discussing your past with others. Therapy is also good for couples and highly recommended because it helps spouses work through their concerns together.
  • Following daily rituals that lead to healthy encounters with others, better relationships with friends and family, and stronger connections with a partner.

5 healthy self-care habits

There are several daily rituals, or self-care habits, that you can maintain each day to lead to a healthier recovery. Below are 5:

Personal hygiene

First and foremost, you should be maintaining your personal hygiene on a daily basis. We know this sounds silly but some people struggle with even the most simple hygiene tasks after addition. So, always make sure that you’re brushing your teeth every day, washing your face, grooming your hair and having it cut, showering, flossing, etc.

Setting a regular routine and taking care of these small tasks every day will eventually help you manage the larger ones too. Set daily hygiene schedules and stick to them strictly. Your body and your mind will thank you!

Health

When was the last time you saw a doctor for a regular physical, or went to the dentist for a cleaning? It may seem silly to go to the doctor when you feel fine but these routine exams with physicians will help you ensure that your body is at the peak of health physically. It’s not just important to take care of your mind – doing so will only fight half the battle. Take care of yourself from all angles.

Always make sure you are taking prescribed medication as directed, scheduling and keeping routine doctor’s visits, and maintaining your health. This also includes getting enough sleep and exercising on a daily basis.

Diet

When you’re in the bouts of addiction, you find yourself completely out of focus. You’re not thinking about anyone else or your body’s needs. Thus, it’s not a surprise that a lot of addicts lose weight. They are not focusing on eating healthy, regular meals throughout the day.

Therefore, you should be making an effort to eat a well-balanced diet on a regular basis. This diet should focus on complex carbs, proteins, and healthy fats to keep your body and your mind energized. Avoid excessive sugars and fast food altogether as these can make you feel sluggish and sick.

Clothing

How often are you thinking about the clothing you wear? Are you dressing in provocative manners? As a recovering addict, you need to change your outlook on clothing and how it can portray desires. Instead, clothing you wear should be comfortable and confident. Your clothes should make you feel good about yourself in a healthy way.

Go through your closet and get rid of clothing that sends the wrong message, or clothing that you haven’t worn in a long time. Also take time to try everything on and make sure that it fits properly. Make sure that all of your clothes are clean and pressed as well. These changes can improve your confidence as a professional and an individual.

Cleanliness

Think about this – can you remember the last time you cleaned your bedsheets and towels, your furniture, your kitchen and bathroom? If not, you should really spend some time cleaning up your home. You should also be maintaining proper sanitation. Clean out your fridge with a disinfectant cleaner and do the same for your showers/tubs, toilets, and drains.

Maintaining a clean environment promotes a healthy mindset and attitude, so make sure you are keeping your home clean and tidy at all times.
