How does sexual orientation relate to sexual addiction?

Sometimes, people wonder if sexual orientation has any impact or effect sexual addiction. In short, it does not.

Sexual addiction, like any other type of addiction, has to do with three main factors:

  • A continued obsession or preoccupation with the drug of choice
  • Loss of control over use
  • Negative life consequences directly related to use

When looking at the cause of sexual or pornographic addiction, gay and lesbian sex addicts are not compulsively sexual because of their sexual orientation.

Like many addicts, including those who identify as straight, addiction may stem from emotional discomfort, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, shame or trauma. Gay and lesbian addicts, in this way, are exactly like heterosexual addicts.

However, some aspects of sexual addiction may differ between heterosexual addicts and those who are gay or lesbian. Some studies have found that more homosexual males who are sex addicts admit to cross or co-occurring addiction — that is, being addicted to more than one thing at a time, such as drugs or alcohol — than heterosexual males. When that is the case, the two often fuse, becoming paired so that one often leads to the other. Both addictions need to be addressed with the proper professional therapist before a healthy lifestyle can be restored.

Therapy should always be a helpful, positive experience. Under no circumstance should a therapist or any counselor try to alter someone’s sexual orientation. According to the American Psychiatric Association, sexual orientation is naturally occurring and cannot be changed or chosen.
